The Hamptons are actually a collection of several smaller towns that are actually closer to New Haven (when the bird flies) than New York. Although the Hamptons themselves are Southampton, Dunes of West and East Hampton, the towns of Hampton Bays, Springs, North Sea, and East Quagga are also included, albeit informally, as well as a number of other small towns and cities.
